Anxiety to Victorville

6qHSR

Q&A: What question makes you anxious? Being asked to speak to a crowd. I can talk to a room on my own terms, but get so nervous with expectations to deliver… perfect intro to my morning.

I got to work early, enough to see parents dropping off their kids, walking with them, and talking with other parents while their kids ran around and ate breakfast.

Today was Family Fun Friday, an opportunity for parents to join their kids in the classroom to witness the reading, math, crafts, etc., and then share some time doing it together.

I got invited into the first grade class and we read part of a story, Enemy Pie, and asked questions about the pictures, the pages as they were read, what the kids predicted would happen, and how the characters felt about their situation.

Next was Coffee Chat with the principal. There was plenty of cream and sugar along with pink pan dulce, strawberries, and watermelon. I listened in and talked with a parent. It’s great to get their POV and gauge their interest in their kids.

Then it was time for the Wellness Meeting and there was still 25 attending parents, about five or so had left. I went upstairs to make copies of the three handouts and then Jorge, my co-worker, passed out a brochure about the 5210 Program.

We let the boss do most of the talking and I said a few things when appropriate and helpful. We let the parents take measuring cups and reusable containers home – to help with portion size for the kids and get them to come back next month.

A parent suggested we have donations of food and time to make other meals that their kids will eat and I think it’s a fantastic idea. One teacher tried it on her students today and when they didn’t like the food she invited the older kids in to have some too. It’s an easy way to find out what the kids like to eat and share that recipe with their parents.

We were outside with the kindergarten classes and taught them about front and back movement while doing exercise, the location of their feet and knees, and let them run around learning to skip, gallop, and jog.

We tried a new idea with the first graders and chose some star leaders who did fantastic using exercises and phrases that we taught them. It was so cute and heartwarming to see our hard work paying off.

I was left alone at lunch today and managed over half the school’s students at once with only one bloody knee and no puking. The kids wasted less food today and the boss released me at 1pm with an “enjoy your weekend” message as he left.

I got home and 30 minutes later we were on the road north. I knew we weren’t making good time only driving 20mph, but somehow stayed positive until Caleb told me we were still closer to home than our destination after 2.5 hours of driving. At one point, it took us a half hour to drive eight miles.

We stopped in Victorville for fuel and dinner for all. Sparky had his usual cubes of ground up whatever flavor and we added beet salad to the mac-n-cheese. Dessert was pineapple-peach kombucha and chili-lime sunflower seeds.

Watching the sunset while Caleb stares at boiling water, along with the fact that after four hours we had finally made it to the 395, made my cares melt away, but not so fast as it would take us another two hours to reach Fossil Falls, but without sitting in traffic. It’s hard for me to fathom how some people willingly choose that commute.

We’re here for the night and Caleb is setting up. Time for me to grab the dog and possibly a jacket before sitting around a fire with cocoa or stumbling around in the dark around lava rocks before staring at the sky for hours (it’s the main reason we’re here). Caleb remembers the strong emotional attachment I have to this place every time.

Lovingly Lettuce

Charlotte and Wilbur the Tank

Q&A: In three words, describe your love life:

long — since the day I was born
torn — lost love along the way
twisted — did things differently

It’s nice to have this topic after today. I got in the car and it smelled like crap. I wouldn’t notice till I got to the gym that another cat had been in my yard and left a stink bomb for my shoes that had just been attacked on Tuesday by soup.

I tried the new Torque Fitness Tank ($2,000 of equipment with accessories) while outside enjoying the sprinkling weather to myself. I was looking forward to breakfast — English muffin with spicy hummus, tomato, egg, and a protein-fruit smoothie.

I moved my budding bell pepper plant inside because it’s getting too much sun and then had some cantaloupe before leaving late for work. I printed new ClassDojo invites and stapled the American Heart Assc. tattoos to them in a second try to get them home.

The boss messaged out 18 minutes before class, so we took care of it (really my co-worker stayed with the kids while I ran around) and then we didn’t have our after work meeting or finish any testing for the two classes needed.

The kids are getting better at getting less food that they don’t want to eat because I’m making them sit at the table until they eat some of it, give it to their friends (it’s not being wasted), or throw it on the ground or in the trash and then get in trouble.

I still can’t get into the building (no code or key) and I still don’t have a staff email. I thought Monday was a holiday, but only in my phone (though the Kids Heart Challenge isn’t on the school calendar and it’s still happening).

I run two miles at the gym and Caleb will walk Sparky and me around the block after I spray the dog with water and then cuddle him to calm us both down. I had a snack, so I wasn’t hangry and would go around the block with the neighbor and her dog too.

Dinner was another excellent salad creation by me with half spicy hummus and half garam masala peanut butter on naan. I need to pack some things for our camp getaway this weekend as Caleb has planned the campsites and trails.

Bad Movies

Halloween season

Q&A: What was the last bad movie you watched? I’d have to remember as I’m on animal documentaries and comedian shows (even listening to them in the car). Comedians, classical music, and educational NPR is relaxing.

I was too sleepy to run this morning, but still got in a weight workout. I dove into 2014 today and posted about Thanksgiving and the day after in Bahrain. Walked my dog and the neighbor’s dog, did laundry and watered the yard.

Took a break to email some parents and already got one to respond. I’ve emailed myself the invites to ClassDojo for the 7th graders and will pass those out next week when they return from fall break and start their Halloween workouts (like zombie high knees).

I walked to the store for milk only to find chocolate and vanilla, but the guy above had no problem filling his cart with Krispy crackers and I think he was going back for more. I would send Caleb and Sparky to the other store to get me some nut secretion.

Fractional Crave

Q&A: What do you crave? A hot shower before climbing into my warm bed.

The keychain incentive is working with the kids and they are getting their parents to sign up. I also passed out our green Youth To The Core shirts to the new kids, minus kindergarten (because there are so many kids and so little shirts). We will either have to order some via prepayment from parents or just let them wear green.

We did leg anatomy review, jump rope, relays, running laps, and free play today along with finishing up our fitness assessments for third, fourth, and fifth grade. Next week will be coloring in their goal charts and prepping for the Latin Heritage event on October 12th. I was told to teach the kids a dance, but it got downgraded to buying orange juice, so I will see what the bosses decide.

Caleb and Josh

I left work and drove to Josh’s house, Caleb’s friend, to hangout with his wife Summer and their kid Leah (helped with her math homework) on their boat. I got to watch seals play and the sunset, the boys drank beers and held bait in the water, the girls took turns holding one fishing pole, and then Caleb fell in off the back of the boat. We went to dinner and I had some tasty tomato basil soup.

Geeking Out

20181001_093922.jpg

Q&A: What are you a geek about? And to think I thought I’d need all day to think about this question. I do the most research on travel, posts on this blog, and anything necessary to help my students eat better and move more. I’m currently watching episodes of 72 Dangerous Animals: Asia on Netflix, reading about love in the Western world, and have tabs open on ways I can help reduce my wasteful impact on the planet.

I handed out keychains to the 16 out of 163 students who have signed up on Class Dojo in the hopes it would inspire more to do the same and already another one joined. It’s an app that allows me to share pictures and messages with their parents, keep track of their behavior and attendance, and create groups and play music. I also passed out temporary tattoos to get the students signed up for the Kids Heart Challenge.

I had one of my bright pink shoes that I started wearing in April go flat on me on the playground on Friday, so I replaced them with a purple to orange pair. I broke them in over the weekend and another teacher wore her new shoes today that matched her dress. I get home only to splash six cups of cold soup on me, my new shoes, the wall, the cabinets, the fridge (inside and out), and all over the floor.

20181001_151005.jpg

Caleb got to clean up the kitchen while I washed myself and clothes and then grabbed something else to snack on since the apple I grabbed after school was not ripe and a bit rotten. Then we made dinner, cooking down all the spinach and adding the other ingredients on top – ta da, salad! We also gathered our veggie scraps and made our own stock which only makes me want to eat all the soft greens in the pot.

I’ve gotten my 5k runtime down to 27:22 and my leg press up to 300 pounds. I’m working on getting my upper body weights into the triple digits, but I need to be more consistent for that to happen and spend less time talking at the gym. I turned down an opportunity to paddle board this weekend when I should’ve taken Sparky with me. He gets more walks and goes for rides again now that Piggy isn’t here to detest the idea.

It’s been nine days since Piggy and I parted ways and tomorrow would be my mom’s birthday, but I’m not about celebrating something for someone who isn’t here. Caleb’s mom has her birthday the day after and I’ll make sure he calls her. He was lucky enough to talk with his dad and sister today, but they’re not able to make him laugh the way my dad did yesterday — then again he doesn’t have car troubles and kittens.
