Items in My Purse

Growing up I liked the idea of a purse. My first one was a red floral backpack with binoculars, silly putty, card game, crayons and other items deemed important by a 10-yr old. I would get a few other purses but never use them. Then for Senior Prom I got a shiny black purse with pink where the tongue would be on a shoe with laces; it went with my outfit. There was a brush, nail polish, mascara, mirror, driver’s license and keys inside.

I wouldn’t get another purse until I spotted a black cloth one with unicorns and rainbows on it a few years later – I love rainbows! This purse will carry my third wallet. The first was of jean material and left on a gas pump by my future husband. The second one was a light blue color with a frog on it that he bought as a replacement. I made sure he felt guilty and then bought my current wallet. It is long and white and full of space.

In my unicorn purse I will carry my first credit card, the keys to my fifth car, a flask (nothing to do with the number of cars), an umbrella, a book, and other miscellaneous items that girls carry around while celebrating the first years of their twenties. I will eventually send the unicorns packing when I find a red plastic purse with hearts all over it in a discount store – I love saving money!

This purse gets the most-used award. I use it as a shopping bag (only after items are paid for), to put leftovers in, as a waterproof case for my camera when caught in the rain, as a place to sneak snacks into a movie theater, and whatever else might come up. I used to envy my mom for always having lotion, tweezers, and nail clippers on hand – these are my most used purse items.

Other items in my purse include: my wallet with cards, cash, receipts, and even pictures of my favorite people; sunglasses – I am now addicted, not so much to style but saving my retina from staring at the sun; a keychain full of store membership cards; band-aids; lip balm – I am no longer into mascara; loose change; notepad; doggy poo-bags; bug-spray – I live in Florida; and my camera when on the go.

This purse is now three years old and the corners are starting to wear. I tried the shoulder bag once but I’m not a big fan. For my next bag I want to be prepared more for cycling as the purse fills my front basket. Perhaps a CamelBak, a reusable bag in panniers, or a cute backpack with an animal on it that can also be used as a pillow. What bags or carrying devices, maybe a red wagon, have gotten you through the different stages in your life?

Happy – Cinco de Enero – To Me

Caleb bought himself a new point-and-shoot camera, that can go underwater, for Christmas; he’s ready to say good-bye to his old film Canon Rebel. In the box is my very first iPod; 11 years after the first one came out. I was doing just fine with my 300 songs on my MP3 player, but upon getting iTunes needed more than 3GB of space; I can finally get rid of my case of CDs.

Outside the box is my ‘lunch-bag space’ of bicycle clothes. I have two pair compression tights, one pair gloves, two blue tees, one pink fitted tee, pair of purple & white shorts, two pair compression shorts, two green fitted long-sleeve shirts, one pair blue Capri pants, and one blue beanie. We went to the store for the socks and bras. We have gone off other blogs and bicycle sites trying to get an idea of how much we will need.

We love camping and hiking and look forward to cycling more. I usually buy used clothes but had trouble finding certain things, and then getting them in my size. There are plenty of websites for used camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags) and gear (stoves, lights) as well, but still trying to find cheap bike route maps. I might be making my own. I am excited about the adventure to come and the health, happiness, and savings it will bring.

I was inspired by a website, but can’t find the link now for credit, about five things you never leave the house without; mine being: camera & accessories, water, clean undies, floss, and sunglasses. If I’m going to be gone awhile I also bring a jacket, my Nat. Park passport, sunscreen, nail clippers, a flashlight, and most times – the dogs. With bicycle camping I will also bring a compass, pocket knife, bug-spray, duct tape, and my helmet.

Sentences, Paragraphs, Pages, Chapters

Since I can remember I have had a love for reading. I could try to say I’m not one for book reviews but my English teacher would say different. I suppose I would feel bad if I were to judge the book wrong, but it is only my opinion. I started thinking about books I have read and why. I thought about their themes and whether they changed my life. I’ve noticed common themes – outdoors, travel, mystery, science; and I’ve noticed some common authors – Jules Verne, Shakespeare, Stephen King, John Steinbeck.

Finishing a book in my opinion means it was either a) a good book, or b) for a grade, and that to me is a good enough review. I would recommend that others read it if that’s the genre they happen to be into. I have a New Year’s resolution to read at least 24 books. I am hoping to greatly surpass this but should some drastic life-changing event occur that would prevent that – I don’t like disappointment. I will in my way, perhaps, give my thoughts, moods, ideas, and inspirations that came while reading.

Our brains are like a book-bag on a deserted island. While on the mainland you can load them full of crap (TV, bad news, depression, and old pizza) on the daily, but when your survival depends on a few key items you need them to be the best. I like to think that we should be overly choosy what goes in because it ultimately determines what comes out. I read these books knowing one day I will say something that only I may know but it will have taught me something or made me laugh, unlike the auto-laugh on TV – I hate that.

Running Towards

Warmth! It may not really be that cold here; it is the Sunshine State, but Caleb brought up a good point last night. When you are used to areas with four seasons 50 degrees is no big deal, but when you get adjusted to temperatures over 80 for nine months out of the year 50 soon feels colder than it should. There is only one treadmill in our current apartment gym so I am stuck waiting for warmer clothes to arrive so that I may again run outdoors.

Many ideas for this picture came to mind. I was going to start with the fact that I’m not running out of ideas, my brain won’t allow it – yet. Instead I’ve been busy with my book resolution. Not only do I want to read a certain amount of books; the more I reread of my collection, the more I can give to the library. I could have also gone with not running away. It’s not that I have anything to run away from but what the good Earth has given me to run towards.

May we all in some form or another find our running, our motivation, to keep moving in life, to keep books being read, to keep music being listened to, to keep bicycles oiled and ready to go, to keep warm socks in our tennis shoes, to go towards the warmth, or to keep up with our companions; dogs and husband alike, and to keep the place we call home full of creativity, cooking, and cheer.

Husband Faces

I could make another long list of reasons I love the husband I have but this is just a short reference to his helpfulness. We had wanted to get out of the house one weekend; when don’t we, and decided on the Museum of Science and History. It is usually great on its own but that day was a special child vs nature awareness day. We had fun watching kids playing with dirt and water and being able to pet sea cucumbers.

We made our way past a craft table and there were masks to try. Of course my husband would use one to pose for a picture; he loves me like that. He didn’t know whether it would ever appear on the internet but now that I have a blog most everything is fair game; especially today when I am having trouble picking an idea. But since this is short and uninteresting I have a link to a video I like that we were just watching, here.
