Peanut Butter Party

Q&A: Write down the name of someone you had a good conversation with recently.
Caleb — he took the week off, and Dad — always looking out for me.

art in the park

I pounced out of bed this morning ready to attack the day. I let the dog out and got in the car. I’m halfway to the gym when I can’t find my ID to get on base. I turn around, Caleb helps me look in all the wrong places, and I go back to the car — found it! I’m on my way back to the gym when Caleb says that he’ll join me. I turn around again. All this mess only cost us about 25 minutes.

I’m motivated as I walk in and can already hear Greg talking about sports. He’s excited to see Caleb with me in the gym which doesn’t happen often because of the gym hours and our work schedules – and because he talks so much and is willing to put his hand in your face to get your attention. We agree to leave early and will go to the other gym if this possibility arises again.

I bring up Halloween in San Diego and Caleb looks up Balboa Park (where there is a haunted trail for $25) and there is an event at the Del Mar Racetrack, but we decide to check out the Museum of Art Sculpture Court and Garden with Sparky. We park near the zoo and walk past our destination at first before turning around and finding the hidden entrance next to the indoor museum and their outdoor drink patio.

running across Cabrillo Bridge

I had been on the phone earlier looking for a dentist that would donate supplies to my school for the Candy Buyback Program and got a phone call telling me that the bags would be ready on Friday! Of course I agreed before checking my calendar, so Caleb might be picking them up, but I’m so excited that I will have something to give the kids for participating and donating their candy to deployed soldiers or a children’s hospital.

We look at art, watch people play in a wheelchair in the park, walk back to the car for water, then we’re off to the Cultural Center with little houses representing different countries — that are closed today. Along our journey, we get to watch some of the navy run in formation while singing about pain and other cadence tunes. We take a long loop back to our parking spot, get more water, and Sparky will sleep on the way home.

We had biscuits with gravy, sausage, and eggs this morning. I had another biscuit with mixed-nut butter in the afternoon. I had some almond butter in a paleo bite and spicy hummus with pita chips while at the neighbor’s house. Caleb will get creative in the kitchen and, while he’s baking this evenings vegetables, will make me a peanut butter drink concoction — good thing I have more than one flavor.

Whistle While I Work

Q&A: You want a new… whistle. The kids think it’s fun to grab it with their sticky fingers to see the shiny silver-colored brass whistle with its cork ball inside. Really the only item on my shopping list is more tights with leg pockets so I can carry my phone at work.

when your neighbor has a tree

Got to the gym late to work on back and shoulders and stopped when my arms got tired. I rewarded myself at home with an English muffin — part of an apple with garam masala peanut butter on half and egg, parsley, and brie on the other.

I got to color in a bar graph at work in an attempt to motivate teachers to get their kids signed up in ClassDojo. The American Heart Association supplies a chart that we will start using next week for the fundraising, and I will do another graph for Box Tops.

I made two kids cry today, but both times it led to progress. I’ve gotten two kids to pull their first tooth and one to show me how well he can jump rope. The kids ran, we sent them for water, and one came back with food in her mouth.

This is not the first time she’s been caught sneaking food — and she wonders why her clothes are fitting more tightly. I sent an email to the teachers to be more aware of this situation so that parents can be contacted and I won’t find crumbs in the carpet.

Awake Dreams VS Asleep Dreams

20181008_062843.jpg

Q&A: What is your biggest dream? To be happy (to put it most simply). My dreams have changed since I was a child. I would daydream about living in a house with kids and at night run away from foxes, snakes, and aliens. Now I daydream about island diving around the world, hiking for months at a time, and spending time with Caleb outside of the navy life. My REM sleep now brings me bits of exercise, sailing, school, or spas with a variety of people from elementary school to present (whether they’ve met or not).

Dreams, like goals, are meant to grow and change. I set up a list of things I thought I would accomplish this year… and I’ve only done one out of eleven, but it’s also because I’ve prioritized other things. We are thinking about what we’re going to do in 4.5 years when Caleb retires from the Navy (what jobs in which country) and I’m sure our dreams will be different as we adjust to the civilian life and all the added taxes and scheduling freedom that come with it (along with being just us, and dog free, for the first time).

TOPIC CHANGE — We tried fennel for the first time the other day. Recipe said to slice, salt, cook, and eat. I found the center (like an artichoke heart) to be the better part, but we ate our tiny pieces of black licorice in disgust, and I realized this is the epitome of adulting — trying something new and following through with it when we could’ve just ordered pizza. I tried it cold in the morning and told Caleb to throw it out. One day, when this memory fades, we can try a different flavor and cooking style to try it again.

It is neat how tastes change. My mom didn’t like (was it strawberries or tomatoes) when I was younger, but at some point didn’t mind them once I was grown. My dad continues to try cucumbers randomly waiting for that moment when they spike joy in him… hasn’t happened yet. For me, it was putting up with mushrooms and now craving them, or trying to avoid celery and now adding it to recipes. Though I go through seasons of sweet or salty, I know that peanut butter will always be there with me, evolving.

TOPIC CHANGE — My gym was closed for Columbus Day, hence why I thought today was a holiday for everyone, but not me. I arrived to the second graders in the middle of a tostada party in celebration of Latin Heritage month, they chose Belize. We went over feet, legs, and pelvis in class today and I got to deal with a giant Pixy Stix at lunch today by blowing it off the kids tray so he couldn’t snort it. We have more kids grabbing less veggies and eating more, but still destroying playground equipment — baby steps.

I got home to a sick husband who had spent the day sleeping and drinking tea, and just as I unpacked my bag Fallon invited me to swim practice. From there we would drop the kids to soccer and then go to the store for dinner. I was going to buy a blood orange cold brew, but we got some mocha cookies instead. I hung out and helped make chicken, bow tie pasta, broccoli, rice and lentils, boiled eggs, paleo energy bites, and watched the salad and jello get prepped for the week.

I felt bad by not being home to take care of Caleb, but he was fine cuddling with Sparky and taking naps (living the dog life for a day) and says he could get used to the role reversal of me going to work every day while he sits around (though he says even the thought of that makes him bored). I had some salad with peppercorn and brought home a new seasoning with coffee and some green kombucha. Caleb had chips for dinner.

I Choose Eggy Danky

Q&A: Are you happy with your choices today? yes.

20181007_062732.jpg

south 395

I had good dreams and woke up next to Sparky as Caleb was making me mint cocoa to warm my hands on this windy morning, with clouds that had finally cleared, but with an increasing light from the sun at 5:30, so that we could still see the stars while he stood next to me and blocked wind and sand in his wooly and jacket with me in flip-flops.

We watched the sunrise over the mountains as we drove south, enjoying the quiet of the road. We had climbed in the tent and looked at brunch places along the 15/215 in case traffic was bad we’d have a place to stop, but we made it home for showers and teeth washing before changing our minds again on where we would eat.

20181007_115703.jpg

Caleb chose Tribute Pizza instead of Lazy Dog or Tiger!Tiger!. He didn’t like Rabbit Hole and I still want to try Punch Bowl Social. He got the everything bagel calzone and I couldn’t help but get my regular (potato puree, two poached eggs, kabocha squash, dino kale, cherry tomatoes, pepita pesto, and pecorino (Italian for sheep) cheese.

I ordered a pumpkin spice coffee, made by the boss, so that Caleb could update his Instagram, and because we got to see the Flavor Bible and hear about pumpkin spice pizza (something to make once, but that shouldn’t be sold). If there had been some I would have tried that too.

Friendly Falls

Q&A: Do you have any new friends? I wouldn’t consider them friends yet, but we are choosing to spend more time together.

20181006_071825.jpg

morning in Fossil Falls

Woke up and packed up to the smell of coffee. I sipped on it and burned my tongue more to add to the pain from last night while Caleb put the tent away.

We drove over and up to Kennedy Meadows. I changed into hiking boots and my petite (their name, not mine) pants, that I haven’t worn in over four years. I parked us further than needed as we walked through the parking lot for this section of the trail.

9 Mile Canyon Rd

We walked easily to the bridge, passing an older guy and later a couple, to arrive to a couple washing their socks in the Kern River. We made it a bit further before Sparky began to slow down so we turned around (also to escape the climbing heat).

20181006_093846.jpg

I exchanged my green jacket for a white long-sleeved shirt and we only carried Sparky for a couple of minutes. We stopped at the General Store, complete with showers and a mini-bar with flat screen TV.

20181006_100237.jpg

I felt a bit out-of-place as the other hikers, coming down the 0.7 mile road to get here, were finishing the season, and us, only a few miles until the city couple showed up looking lost.

20181006_112833.jpg

We drove north for lunch, fuel, and a nap for the dog. We had pink cheese and parked on a small dirt path near Olivas Ranch Rd and started our hike by crossing a bridge over Lone Pine Creek with Sparky already walking behind me.

“I don’t eat anything with a face” — other vegetarians, more eggs for me!

We kept at it for 45 minutes and then the rain started to drip, drip.. with the threatening wall of torrential downpour approaching. I picked up Sparky and Caleb carried him the last five minutes to the car, which we were safely inside when the first rain started.

Caleb near Kern River

We return to Fossil Falls and our spot from last night is taken so we park next to it, realizing how far apart the driving is but how close the sites are. There were only two other cars here last night, but we see at least five as we pull in.

rain in two directions

Caleb sets up the tent and I’m wishing for my rain coat or umbrella so we can walk around. The rain stops, as fast as it started, and we set out on a leisurely stroll thinking we have 90 minutes before it returns.

desert rainbow

It was only ten minutes before I was hustling through the bushes trying to keep up with the jackrabbit, though I think his speed was due to fear of me, not getting wet. Sparky is still sleeping in the car. I take off my muddy boots and wet shirt and hat.

20181006_193630.jpg

We settle in for a night of on and off rain, some from the east and west, with a side of double rainbows and thunder. I miss the bluer skies, smaller roads, abundant wildlife, and other perks without human obstruction. I appreciate my time here, every time.
