Glamping

Q&A: Camping or hotel? I’d pick a tiny tent, bright stars, and warm fire. I think it would be a great idea to have rental stations for travelers to have that option too; somewhat like Happy Camper available in Southern California.

Two Tickets to The Trail

Q&A: ________ is completely ridiculous. The amount of fun we had tonight.

20181028_175404.jpg

driving to 6th Street

We were going to go last night, but figured it would be super busy and we could wait for a school night for a smaller crowd to the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park. We were wrong. We walked up at 6:06 (if only time allowed it to be 6:66) and there was already a line along the fence for people waiting to get in, and another line to buy tickets.

We stood behind a couple and in front of a group of 14 girls while we waited and watched little kids run around while their parents held their spot in line. Caleb thought we should come back when it was darker, but just because the front gate opens at 6:30 doesn’t mean we’ll be getting into the park before 7p.

the outside line

The zig-zag line begins to fill and Zombieland is on the projector to keep the crowd entertained while they wait. The girls happen to know the guy scanning tickets and he gets them in before us. We don’t mind the absence of their glow-in-the-dark jewelry and the light from their cameras as they try to capture everything.

We’re ushered into a small room to watch a short film — stay between the ropes, don’t touch the people, and don’t use flash. It is darker, foggier, and the screams louder. You can opt out of the maze or use the emergency exits, but you’d miss the girl crying to her mom… and this is just the beginning.

Greetings from the inside line

We paid twice as much for Scary Farm at Knott’s Berry, and there were more mazes one-way paths there, but I would rather drive further and pay more for what they had in store for us in San Diego. We find a dead-end and Caleb is able to spook a family by turning slightly and saying ahh!

They realized he didn’t work there, but we still needed to find the way out. Once the maze is accomplished, we get in another line to begin the trail. We are first this time and laugh when these boys try to pass us, multiple times, and get too scared and want their mom only to see one fall on his butt and then watch the family run away.

into the next fright

There are the usual suspects of horror films (IT, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Ghostface) and the trail added nuns, lunatics, and an Oompa Loompa. Sometimes you had to feel your way in the dark or move through large inflatables or guide yourself by the one blinding light at the other end of the room.

There was a girl who refused to go into a classroom and boys that didn’t want to enter the bus. There was a barn, church, hospital, bathroom, graveyard, and more that made a boy lose his whole family. He wouldn’t be the only one as upon exiting there was a crowd of people waiting to be reunited with someone.

I asked if we could walk the trail backwards (which Caleb thinks a family did), but the guard said I could probably do it again from the beginning. I’m not waiting in that line again, though I could take a selfie and buy a necklace this time around. I don’t need either, so we will walk the low-lit road past the crowd to the car.

Goofy is Good

Q&A: What was the last goofy thing you did? A synonym for ridiculous in which I have participated in recently while in public with my husband.

So there I was…

blogging about the parsnips I bought earlier when my computer reminded me that I’ve not dealt with its internals lately, so I will be posting this from my phone and then reading a book while I wait for any sign of progress.

Today was so special and meaningful and different from the other days like it that there is no picture needed to share how awesome it was.

When was the last time you did something out of the ordinary?

Golfing for Children

Q&A: How do you feel about your body? It is an efficient machine that could use more upper body strength (in my arms and mentally).

Caleb in action

Caleb took the day off in solidarity of my two weeks of not going to work. We went by the boss’s office so I could pick up my check before going to Morley Field to play disc golf with Josh, Summer, and Alvaro.

I left on the 7th hole to get a drink and napped in the car instead until they were on the 14th hole and then bought a raspberry tea Monster so I wouldn’t pass out while I finished watching them to the 19th basket.

the competition

Summer tossed her disc into a tree aiming for the 16th and we got it out with her climbing the tree and using a pole after the guys tried throwing rocks without success. This distraction caused them to skip the 17th hole and we finished at 11:30am.

grass roots

Caleb and I decided on lunch at Slater’s 50/50 and I tried the quinoa burger on mixed greens with an egg on top. We bought dog food with a coupon, cashed my check, and picked up wiper fluid for both cars on the way home.

We walked Zeus, the neighbor’s dog, and when we got back the kids were already home. I offered to watch them tonight so their parents could go to Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood. The girls’ 30 minutes of reading took 50 and then it was time for swim.

Pumpkin Orla

They grabbed their towels and goggles and we got there 20 minutes early, but this gave us time to have a peek at the Halloween event going on — kids making slime, decorating tiny things, and enjoying a small bounce castle, etc.

The girls worked on backstroke, laps and diving for rings, and the oldest on treading water and his techniques. We got them home for showers and I went to pick up the other kid while Caleb started the stuffed bell peppers in the oven.

Dinner was ready at 6p and they took an hour to eat. I was reading with J when K interrupted and I had him write sentences and confiscated his phone. K would put himself to bed early, but not before the evening’s excitement.

J’s pepper and a half, plus a grilled cheese sandwich, caught up with him and landed on the stairs and in the sink while the girls watched. Caleb cleaned that up and then the girls stretched before I sent the kids to their rooms to play.

That only lasted so long until the girls decided to come into the living room to enjoy quiet time too, while playing sleepover. Caleb is reading and J is bored and trying to entertain himself by bothering the girls, the dog, and the clean laundry.

The girls go to their room after Caleb leaves at 9p to watch videos and send emojis to their mom. One is passed out when I check on them and I take the other one’s phone so she will sleep too. The dog was hanging out, but must be asleep now too.

Hip Hop Honestly

IMG-20181025-WA0000.jpg

Q&A: What is the most honest thing you’ve said today? You’ve got to practice. I worked with both classes outside today and was showing the seventh graders how to stretch and told them that if they try for something then one day they might achieve it or at least be better at. It’s the progress that counts, and in this case it’s the ability to touch their toes.
