To Get or Not to Get: Part 1

straight

my hair straightened by Skyler

That is a very popular question in Las Vegas – to get out of bed, to get drunk, to get the boots that are on sale, not to get the large plate of nachos, not to get stuck talking to kids all night, and definitely not to get the bleeding heart tattoo.

This morning would start at 10:00 – seven hours of sleep with two hours of prep time to shower off last night’s splashed alcohol and smoke clouds, and feed and walk the dogs. I share with Deanna, “What if there had been four girls in this room? One would shower and the other use the tub. One would use a towel to dry her hair and the other the blow dryer. Otherwise we would spend a lot more time in the room.” She agreed, but we both still wished there had been 6-8 of us so we could’ve rented a limo and ridden down the Strip.

Breakfast consists of caffeine and chocolate – a turtle brownie and water for me and a cookie and coffee for Deanna at a quarter after noon. We love being adults. I’m still mid-walnut and caramel when we stop by the Ginalli hair booth – and while the guy on one side is with a customer I approach him – thinking he’s the same one from two days ago, but these guys do work shifts and some of them look-alike, so I could’ve been mistaken. Skyler, on the other side, invites me to sit down and straightens my hair. I buy a Ginalli Milano tourmaline straightener for twice the price of a similar model offered at Wal-Mart or CVS Pharmacy.

We got a good deal though because he’s able to straighten Deanna’s hair in the same amount of time – and her’s is four times thicker than mine – at least. We are happy with the demo and even happier with the results – smooth beautiful hair in a fraction of the time it was taking us with our cheaper versions at home – though we weren’t using the tourmaline either. Deanna buys one too and we know that the $100 was spent wisely – even if I have to curl my hair to have a reason to straighten it again.

We run the long bag up to the room, pass the goofy (in hysterics) couple getting their cartoon Vegas faces drawn, and make our way to The Cosmo to see if the P3Studio still has the LaChapelle art that I read about online – it’s closed when we get there after 1:00 pm for remodeling. While we’re here we find more interest in the amount of sewing machines that make up the wall for AllSaints Spitalfields than we do for the international fashion inside. Across from there is a chef shop – alcohol, chocolate, cups, candles, cookbooks, owl timers, aprons, dessert kits, and knife sets – perhaps a gift for an aspiring chef or a way to throw a party in your room.

Art, glass, and reflections are everywhere in The Cosmo – and we like it. Something else that’s neat is the u*tique shop – a vending machine where most everything is $20 – rollable flats, a vodka flask, a stuffed rainbow rabbit, a book by Mindy Kaling, shiny sunglasses, and lipstick/mascara emergency kits. Then, we are walking down this hallway when I see a large tank of jellyfish – Wow, would you look at that?! Oh wait, where did it go? We turned around to look for it, thinking we had peeked through an open door, but when we turned around the jellyfish had turned into bubbles.

The Cosmo has large columns in the West End Tower with LED screens on them that reflect off the shiny floor and the mirrored ceiling – it’s spectacular and whimsical. Outside the Bellagio we get stopped by three guys in their Miami Heat and Hawaiian shirts and ask us to take a picture of them with each of their cameras, then I take one of them and they want one of us – we pose. Inside there is great sound coming from the piano. This time the face looks more friendly and recognizable – like Eddie Izzard. He totally interrupts himself to smile for my blurry picture and then after learning that I’m from San Diego recommends that I eat at Croce’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar.

The bar opened in 1985 by Ingrid Croce, widow of singer Jim famous for Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and Time in a Bottle (that influenced Ingrid’s cookbook Thyme in a Bottle), who died in 1973 at 30 years old. The restaurant, after 28 years of operation, has moved 1.4 miles to its new location, and name Croce’s Park West, due to a lease disagreement.

I thank the pianist as he tries to recall where he was in the song he was playing and make an audio note in my camera as we make our way to Caesar’s Palace – filled with a large collection of Roman inspired statues. I’m not usually one to suggest Starbucks, but an unlabeled Izze caught my eye, so I bought the blackberry flavor and Deanna an orange one. I appreciate the ability to reclose a water bottle and put it in my purse, keeping it cooler than holding it in my hand, but don’t want to chance it with this sticky liquid.

Gordon Ramsay’s Pub & Grill has a decorative wall of silver kegs with colored stripes that stand out from the other squares and angles of the ceiling and columns that find themselves in the Palace – mostly white, marble, and gold. There are skylights – real and fake, elaborate fountains filled with old change, plants and lights to attract our eyes, and a Vespa with a chance to win if you send in a picture with someone on it. We pass the gelato court with the flavor in its non-gelato form – chocolate covered strawberries or Oreos for cookies and cream.

We walk by the tallest H&M I’ve ever seen with manikins that look like they are on a more-clothed spring break and one swinging from the rafters. We walk through Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man – a store that sells chocolates, emergency tins you can fill, and most everything else you can think of – music, liquor, crepes, coffee, milkshakes, artwork, and fondue. Why didn’t we load our stomachs with food and our arms with bags – we weren’t hungry yet at 2:20 pm, and we wouldn’t be for another two hours.

We walked by a large tank full of fish with stripes, spots, yellow tails, unicornfish, stingrays, and apparently ones that talk to three-year old girls. We managed to make it outside, past the friendly gold busker on his lunch break, and back into Caesar’s Palace at the Forum Shops where I’m impressed by the height of the statues and the spiral escalators. There’s plenty of shopping to be done here, but only a few stores will get us inside and even fewer will get us to actually purchase something – Deanna using the lack of luggage excuse and me the husband excuse and both of us using the ‘we don’t want to carry all this around for the next few hours’ excuse.

Inside Anthropologie we see a pop-out version of The Little Prince, and as awesome as it may be, it will never replace the signed one I was gifted in April 1998 by my other mother Caroline, so I see no need in getting it – unless in afterthought I could’ve gifted it to her. In Planet Hollywood, the restaurant, they have the Chucky Doll used in the 1988 movie, an autographed hockey mask by Kane Hodder from Friday the 13th Part V in 1985, the tiny handprints of Chuck Norris in lit-up glass, and a pair of duct-taped snakeskin cowboy boots worn by the Marlboro Man in a 1991 film – among many other things hanging on the wall and displayed in tables.

The next place to grab our attention was the Bettie Page store. It would be easier to shop in there if I only wanted one thing, but choosing between all the different floral colors or the detachable overall shorts or the silver roses dress amongst many others that would take me back to the 50s is overwhelming. Then there’s the process of trying each one on to find the perfect fit – what’s easier – the jewelry store with rings tied to large shiny balls hanging in a glass box where I was told I might only get one with the purchase of the other – obviously. And not that my husband didn’t buy enough finger bling for me, but they put all the skinny finger rings on display.

Back outside of Caesar’s Palace, our second attempt to make it to another casino/hotel, and we happen upon a spray paint artist bragging that his masterpieces only take six minutes – I’d seen them done in ten while in San Francisco, so I stuck around and turned the video camera on. It took him eight minutes and then he offered it up for $30-80 donation. I waited for anyone who was there first to buy, and when they didn’t I gave him $30 for a painting and a paper bag – I’d paid $20 in San Fran and gotten a frame.

Past the Mirage fountain, into Treasure Island, past the commemorative Sirens of TI motorcycle, and past the buffet offering chocolate covered strawberries – which would’ve been worth the $20 entrance if I’d had a large plastic bag in my purse, but I didn’t so we continued on past more desserts and other art displays. Back outside, we go to Margarita Bar with me looking for a coffee drink. It will end better than last night when I was willing to take shots, shooters, and jello shots to celebrate the holiday, but ended up keeping it tame. The guy behind the bar says the coffee is crap, so he will hook us up with more tequila in our margarita – that works for me.

We make it across the street to the Venetian with a nice view of the gondola rides below. It feels nice to walk on the decorative tile floor with the electric candle lamps above and the sun casting shadows on the wall beside us. Las Vegas is like a labyrinth for drunks, that sober people may have a better chance of solving, but it continually gives you the opportunity to find something new or different. Inside there is a lot of golden color on frames, in pictures, on walls, and the smell of a lunchly snack coming from Tintoretto’s where we sit in the back at the untableclothed section only to have a man sit near us to demand one because he doesn’t feel like sitting up front where they’re offered.

The Green Comes Out in Vegas: Part 2

From the Luxor

We had managed to walk back into Excalibur and a lady stopped to show us a sample of MoYou roll on nail art. I got green and white flowers, and green and white zebra stripes on my right hand, and red and black hearts with the word love on my left ring finger. The lady spoke too quick for me and I wanted the large plates she was using, but Deanna got the  French Kit and they sell hundreds of plates online and other nail polish brands will work too. She covered my nails in a top coat, “to make it look shiny”, but it began to look gray the more it dried – which was quickly and made me very happy.

We had to make our way back to the tram so that we could ride back to Mandalay Bay and then walk to THEhotel to watch the sunset from the miX Lounge. We passed the candied apples and rode down the escalator with a mirror above – which I love. Back in the tram, “Please do not lean on the door,” and we passed the Luxor again. Maybe later we would see it from the outside in better detail. More fancy carpets, more multi-tiered fountains, and poker seats for $100 an hour. This hotel has shinier walls and floors and a very yellow lit hallway. At the top, we are met with a glass bubble curtain enclosing the dining area with the sunset to our left and a private event to our right.

Maybe there was supposed to be more color tonight in the sky. Clouds and arriving twenty minutes sooner than 6:40 pm might’ve helped too. I still enjoyed the view and the moment for what it was – minutes spent doing something I wanted with someone, who after the goofy years of school and the straining years of becoming an adult, I can still enjoy hanging out with – and who made the effort to keep in touch and show up too. Thank you Deanna for being a best friend. I’m grateful to add to the memories of childhood too.

Back inside Mandalay Bay (we could walk through these places eight times and still find something new) we passed Aureole – a restaurant that would usually just be too pricey for us to dine at, but this one comes with an attraction – a four-story, $1.2 million, wine tower inspired by Mission: Impossible that has given the Wine Angels a job since 1999. We got to see one of the ladies in action and if you decide to eat there you get to walk around and down the tower to the tables below. Perhaps if I ever win the lottery my big senseless spend will be to go in the tower and find a bottle of Chateau Petrus to sip with Caleb.

All the way at the south end of Mandalay Bay is the Shark Reef Aquarium where you can walk through the tunnel. We were looking forward to this – even at $18 each, but we got to the ticket gates two minutes after the last ones are sold. They more than likely would’ve taken our money, but we agreed it would be better to have more time to visit on a return trip! Now would be the long trek back to the room to drop off shopping bags, take care of dogs, and get ready for the late evening. We passed a pregnant woman squatting to put her head between two marble-like boobs, a man getting his shoes shined, and some shiny guitar purses on red manikins.

After a group got off the tram at the Luxor, and I got to take a picture of the Sphinx, we had enough room to sit down and enjoy the rest of our ride. We would get back to Planet Hollywood at 7:50 pm and then the hassle of our evening would begin. Our keys didn’t work in the door and I knew it was because of the barking coming from the other side of the door. We went downstairs where I paid $84 for the one night, filled out three forms, and then waited over an hour (with me checking in every ten minutes) for security to let us in our room so that I could put the dogs in the car. They were going to move us to the pet floor, but continue to charge us. The fine print and the employee were very hard to understand – and it seems they make more money that way.

I took some deep breaths. At least for our trouble the manager knocked off some resort fees, so I helped save Deanna some money and we got to people watch the others staying on our floor – drunk, lost, laughing. Two girls got dressed up the first night and tonight were going out in flip-flops and sweaters. Two guys had taken the south elevators when they needed the other side to get to the right floor. By 10 o’clock we were on the prowl for a Dirty Girl Scout Cookie. We walked through Heart Bar and past the dancers to Halo Bar where we got the iciest chunks in our shots ever, ordered a beer, and left.

We watched the trees blowing outside the window of Mandalay Bay and I thought it had to be a fan or some sort of joke, but when we stepped outside (sans jacket – hoping to get too drunk to need it) I quickly realized the temperature had dropped and that I was too lazy to go back upstairs, so we just hurried into the nearest building – The Cosmopolitan. We were met with a shiny curtain (at least three floors high) and a line of girls waiting to get into Marquee. I saw Rose. Rabbit. Lie. written on the directional sign above us and wanted to check that place out.

Walking through The Cosmo is like taking a tour of the most art inspired hotel. Everything about the restaurants and shops is outdone in uniqueness, but the hallways have large dogs, a shoe you can sit in, and other art as you walk and large abstract pieces on the walls. We saw our first postcard art vending machine and found out the place we searched for was closed – or maybe it was already packed and all the fun hidden behind soundproof doors – or 10:30 at night is too early for this happening place to open. I could spend hours just admiring the large pictures, odd-shaped tables, different light forms, shiny and reflective walls, eclectic furniture, and carpet patterns of The Cosmo.

This place just seems to stand out, more so than anywhere we’ve been to yet, and then we see the Rhinestone Roadster – Liberace’s car – one in a collection of many from his museum that closed in 2010. The foundation is trying to make a comeback because, “Too much of a good thing… is wonderful!” which also seems to be the theme here at The Cosmo. I’d warmed up enough to forget how cold it was outside until we were walking quickly on the moving belt that approaches the Bellagio. If watching the fountain show from here wasn’t entertaining enough, we got to see a guy run by us (wrong way on the belt) screaming something about a terrible movie exit.

There was no film crew – amateur or otherwise following him, but there were his friends or adult children who tried to keep an eye on him – he hadn’t fallen or collided with anyone yet. The Bellagio gets my award for best lobby. There are over 2,000 hand-blown flowers by Dale Chihuly on the ceiling to compliment all the real flowers that surround statues, grow near fountains, climb out of oversized pots, and complete the body of caterpillars in the garden. In the back of the garden is a large frame filled with living art, and you can see the water dripping from behind the canvas.

As the color attracts your eyeballs attention, the running water and live piano will do magic for your ears. This inspired me to use my other senses – as I smelled the pink daisies and tried to take a selfie, as I tasted the Anchor Steam beer in my hand and attempted a ceiling photo, as I heard the bottle hit the floor and felt the beer splash up on my legs covering my boots and dress in the process, and as I went into the nearest bar – Fix – and used the bartender’s dirty wet rag to wipe the stickiness off. I had picked up the bottle and a man appeared out of nowhere to keep an eye on my spill until a mop arrived.

I worried that I should clean it up, but in Vegas where things can get messier I had to be grateful that the bottle hadn’t broken. I offered and was kindly assured it would be taken care of. This is where cash for tips would come in handy. Everyone else was too busy to notice, so we carried on as if nothing had happened. Moments later we are met by two boys – literally – one said he was 21 but had forgotten his ID. I just ignored them and they followed us for a while before realizing it. They offered to get us drink discounts at their work or we could go back to their mom’s house with a bottle bought from the liquor store – I don’t think so!

reflective ceiling balls – can you see us?

We find our way to the north side of Lake Bellagio to watch the last three minutes of the show playing to My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion made popular by the film Titanic. We bypass Caesar’s Palace to check out O’Sheas across the street, but when met with a line walk up to a bar in The Quad. There were four guys ordering drinks and standing in the way of us. I took one of the blue ones they got and Deanna got a piña colada. They were headed to Carnival Court – live music outside – and it was still too cold for me so we went inside after hearing them talk shit to their friend, calling him Wrecking Ball for going to a Miley Cyrus concert with his girlfriend.

drinking and gambling

We made our way in and out of the Toby Keith Bar & Grill – it was not him singing on stage. The drinks must’ve started to kick in because I had to ask a bartender where we were. When he told us Harrah’s I replied that we made it, but we weren’t done for the evening, so I don’t know what I was thinking. We made our way to BLT Burger in The Mirage – a place I remember Caleb and I eating – and sat at the bar. We ordered buffalo curly fries and waffle fries. Then at one point I had the blue drink I walked in with, the Guinness with champagne that I wanted to try, and the fuzzy navel shot that the guys next to us bought – only in Vegas!

The Beatles LOVE Box Office

We finished the fries, took the shot, I dropped the remaining blue drink, and grabbed my brown beverage in a plastic cup to go. The guys had left, but we met them in the hallway, so the tall one in a Hawaiian shirt tossed the drink I didn’t like (Guinness is better with cider) and ordered us each an orange Julius, gave us gambling money, and told us to have a good evening. They’d already made an exit, but perhaps this made them feel better (I know it did for us) and gave them more time to escape – as if they needed to.

We started to wander again and found The Beatles section of The Mirage and with no one in sight we kept moving. I remember being cold again and passing in front of Caesar’s Palace. Then I remember telling this guy on the escalator to pull his pants up. When I thought there might be a confrontation I told him I said that because it was freaking cold out, so his friend gave me his jacket to wear until we made it to the doors of Planet Hollywood – where we would be going inside and they would not. Thank you stranger for helping keep me warm and making me want to buy a fuzzy jacket.

From there, a KOI promoter walked us to the entrance of the club at the top of the escalators and at $20 each after 2:00 am we changed our minds and made our way to the room. I took off the tie that I hadn’t made blink all night, put my jacket on, and made my way downstairs to take care of the dogs. I sat in the car to make sure Sparky ate, then walked back to the room. Deanna had the TV on, but that soon became a bright spot making noise and then my face hit the pillow – Goodnight Vegas.

The Green Comes Out in Vegas: Part 1

I feel too hot and I fight with the covers. It seems that I managed to crawl in them last night, properly pajama’d, with them still tightly tucked into the side. All the restless movement wakes me enough to roll over and see the clock read 8:30 am. I know I should let the dogs out, but there’s no backdoor here to easily stumble to. My eyes are still half-shut as I look at what appears to me a night-light in the corner of the room. When I wake, at 10:30 am, I will realize that it’s the sun coming in the side of the thick curtain over the large window.

My head hurts and I know I’m dehydrated. I grab the glass I let the dogs use yesterday before bringing up their dish of water and fill it from the sink in the bathroom – because that’s not weird in a hotel. I imagine we will have more sightseeing than drinking on today’s menu. I let the dogs make good use of the bed while I got in the shower. I wasn’t about to pass hundreds of people looking and smelling like I did last night – though I’m sure I felt oh so pretty then – that’s not the feeling I had trying to comb booze out of my windblown hair.

clearly marked exit

Everything was still in a haze while I went downstairs with the dogs, but I felt renewed and fresh with my frizzy hair and clean dress on. I put a Band-Aid on the ball of my foot to keep a blister from developing. We wondered how far I would have to walk in boots a half-size too big before something would happen – and I don’t have exact mileage, but it consists of lots of elevators, escalators, casinos, and a dance floor. I feed the dogs and they are ready to pass back out on the bed while Deanna applies some lipstick. We make sure we have all the major supplies needed – sunscreen and camera for me, room key and phone for Deanna.

wave to the yellow person

Last night we got bombarded by drink offers. This morning it’s offers to buy and try the latest skin care products, wrap around shirts, roll-on nail polish, and a straightener/curler in one – this I want to stop at, but not before we find something to eat. It’s 12:30 pm and we are looking for a place (Planet Dailies) that I forgot the name of because I saw French toast advertised there. Then we check a mall map and find a place called Fresh and an employee on a Segway tells us it will be on our left – when the map clearly says right.

some festive piano accordion song while walking around

playing the piano accordion for the holiday

Either way it doesn’t matter. We pass it the first time and when we reach the informational booth at the end another employee tells us the place is no longer open. We find it, on the right, on our return trip, but they only sell lunch. We decided on Jamba Juice and I got the apple ‘n greens smoothie. With breakfast in hand we can return to the booth with men doing hair. One of them will give me some curls to show the quality and efficiency of the product, but I’m not yet in the mood to spend a chunk of cash or carry a bag around and Deanna is not yet convinced that it will work on her thick hair.

We watched, only momentarily, while a girl got a tattoo on the top of her right thigh. Then saw the fountain show outside of Stripper Bar before walking through an art gallery and focusing on pieces by Nano Lopez. The employee had something to say to me for taking a picture of the information card (facing the door and no art) so I would remember later, but nothing to the girl in the back taking pictures with her phone – I suppose Apple, Nokia, or Samsung are more discreet than my Canon.

Then at 1:30 in the afternoon we made it outside and I got the same feeling one gets from drinking lunch in a bar and walking into the sunlight again – like a vampire or an ant under a magnifying glass. There was a man painting and another playing the piano accordion nearby. There was an increase in the color green – clothes, accessories, lights, and signs, and Irish music in the distance. Our bodies absorbed the smoothies and by 2:00 pm we determined it was time for a snack.

We admired the outdoor seating before going into Bobby’s Burger Palace where they serve spiked (where doesn’t in Vegas) milkshakes – that we didn’t get, and French fries and sweet potato fries that we did. We got our order to go and I didn’t feel like standing to wait, so when the fries came with dipping sauce (making it harder to walk and eat – my favorite is their Habanero ketchup) we stayed in our seats and chowed down. They have bottles of sauce at the table, they brought us ketchup and honey mustard in little plastic dishes, and offered us new ketchup pack that I hadn’t seen before – with the option to peel-and-dip or tear-and-squeeze.

fist bump or knuckle sandwich?

fist bump or knuckle sandwich?

This reminded me of the peanut butter packet I saved from Canada because it was written in French. The amount of green and noise increased as we made our way to the Celtic Feis happening on and around the Brooklyn Bridge in front of New York New York – until we went inside where the theme is mostly orange and the walls are covered in screens and sports statistics for the ESPN gambler. It seemed overwhelming to sit in a theater chair and stare at so much action. I found it more relaxing looking at all the watches hanging from the Swatch store ceiling.

Kiss Me I'm German

Kiss Me I’m German

As we walked by a drink station in the casino I tried to nonchalantly take a picture of a bunch of guys in capes – Cape Gang 2014… I Stay Fly, but they noticed me and then couldn’t stand still for a non-blurry photo – oh well. We got lost coming out of the casino – there is an exit for the roller coaster, an exit to stare at the back of another casino, and the exit that would take us back through the party of green. We make it across the street to the Rainforest Café (a place we both haven’t been to since we were twelve, and another  number on our list of places to come back to) inside the MGM.

We pass the Hakkasan Nightclub at 3:00 pm where Everlast will be performing after 10:00 pm. We’ve been given a spot on the guest list and that there tells me we would have to wait in line unless our boobs are the biggest and our dresses the shortest – or we came with men who have fat wallets – which is very common in Vegas, but we have no idea where this night will take us, so we aren’t making any guarantees. We pass by a buffet and the employee ladies usher me forward and welcome me to take pictures – silly photographing tourist – while one of them (from looking at my boots guesses that we’re from Texas) inquires about something she saw on TV.

Deanna goes on to explain that the Hook ‘Em Horns symbol is friendly and sports related. Then of course she has to tell her about the Gig ‘Em Aggies – the proud symbol of Texas A&M where she graduated with her Bachelor’s in Awesome in 2008 – which seems forever ago now. We continue our trip south and walk into Excalibur after walking past the wet and breezy home of the bridge gnome while I hold my dress down from blowing too high in the wind. Upon one of our exits of this place – there will be many – we pass two girls, one in a wheelchair, and they are having too much fun, but of course there is no such thing. And then we wonder if she got hurt in Vegas or decided to come and get drunk anyways.

a knight in Excalibur

a knight in Excalibur

This casino’s theme is all castles, kings, dungeons, and knights – I like it, especially the half-dressed people offering to take pictures with us. We take the tram from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay – totally bypassing the Luxor, but finding our way to shopping all the faster – and learning that there are multiple trams around the strip to get you where you want to spend money – if you can find them. Even the monorail cars are decorated in detailed graphics. Vegas pays attention to the details to make sure that you feel you are somewhere special with people who care – and they might not, but they have some of the most patience in the world that I know of.

a picture of The Strip

a picture of The Strip

There are more big lobbies, large casinos, bright lights, and long walks. There’s a guy getting a tattoo on his right arm and I get a better picture in the mirror’s reflection of what looks like a smoking clam. Also in Mandalay Bay is the most decorated exterior of a House of Blues I’ve ever seen – covered in bottle tops, beads, glass, faces, and chairs with plants and lights surrounding the walls. The metal arbor to the Boiler Room, a steampunk themed bar, is more attractive to me than the design inside. There’s shirt and cup stores, a man playing the bagpipes, a sock market, and a Popped stand selling artisanal kernels. If that wasn’t enough to get me in a shopping mood than the LICK shop – full of tongues, colors, and candies – sure did the trick.

to and from on the tram

I thought I would bring home the Pink’ adelic – white chocolate raspberry with pop rocks and nerds – to share with Caleb, but then I had to look at the other flavors and Deanna got curious. She picked up a Dirty Vegas – a mix of all the flavors, and then I might as well buy three and save a dollar… or spend three more and get the Marilyn – white chocolate coconut. Then it’s through the rainbow Twizzlers entrance into LICK where I buy non-chocolate pop rocks (so they won’t melt into a clump again), mints because the tin has my name on it, a Vegas magnet, a dark chocolate Ritter Sport bar, and two new chocolates – a red velvet cake to try with Caleb and a pumpkin & sweet potato bar.

Deanna would’ve bought the $30 chocolate heels but was concerned about them breaking or melting in her bag on the plane; though the clerk told us she could ship it, Deanna is more of a fancy shoe wearer than melt-able shoe eater. We made our way into the Luxor where the design and layout of their rooms intrigued me just looking up at the floors that resemble the Guggenheim Museum and imagining the theme and art behind each set of doors. And we could’ve taken a ride down the Nile, but Vegas has remodeled away from family rides and pirate kid shows to titties and Jabbawockeez – the eight-member hip-hop crew that now stars at the Luxor for their show PRiSM.

I saw a sign to Slurp Noodles and we would walk around for fifteen more minutes before Rice & Company opened at 5:00 pm. The hostess wanted all my hotel information and then for me to wait to be seated, but told another lady to please be seated at the bar, so we followed. I got a glass of water with a bowl of lemons while we looked over the menu. At the other end, a customer would use a phone app to get the TV working and all agreed he deserved a discount when the manager walked by surprised that after two weeks it was finally fixed only to realize that it wasn’t.

I wanted the mango avocado roll in a cone shape, but forgot to ask for it so it came out in a regular cut roll, but stacked on a rectangular plate. I didn’t know if that would be enough so I ordered some vegetable spring rolls too with sweet and sour sauce and hot mustard – which I do not like. I put a piece of gari (pickled ginger) on top of the sushi roll before dipping it in Sriracha – a first for me, but also a tasty choice of sweet and spicy. We got leftovers and added that to the jumble of things we were already carrying – besides the four-foot long bottle necklace of booze that we opted out of.

To The City of Secrets: Part 1

my 5:30 am selfie

my 5:30 am selfie

If I’m waking before 6:00 am it’s because I’m either riding bikes with Caleb (so he can get to work on time) or I’m anxious about getting to Las Vegas to reconnect with a friend from second grade to high school graduation. I took a pre-trip selfie – not a morning person, but it let me know to fix the time on my camera from DST before heading out the door at 5:40 am. I went to 7-11 for a coffee and left my house covered in the light of the moon shining through the neighbor’s tree as I headed towards the highway.

I’m admiring the bright moon on my left and the growing color of the sunrise on my right and enjoying the moment… when I look bewilderedly in front of me at the approaching headlights. Just north of Escondido on the 15N, traveling at 75 mph or more, I have only time to honk and abruptly change lanes as all the other cars have done. My heart is still racing when I pass a man with jumper cables before realizing I could’ve helped him. The possibilities of instant death are out there – good morning to them and thank you for letting me continue on to Las Vegas.

I wouldn’t stop until Victorville at 8:00 am to donate used coffee and then again in Baker to buy gas. It’s there that I noticed a guy with a cardboard sign with VEGAS written on it sitting on the corner next to the on-ramp. I picked up Boomer and he had no problem tossing his bag in the backseat with the dogs. I laid it down so Piggy could cuddle with it and not have it fall on her. The car kindly beeped to remind him to wear his seatbelt and we were on our way. We parked in the Hooters Casino Hotel parking lot at 11:00 am and he gave me one of his homemade tacos, including the tortilla, that a lady had gifted him.

Deanna wasn’t due at the McCarran Airport until 2:00 pm so I decided to walk about a mile up the strip with Boomer.  What looks like a 15-minute walk on Google Maps quickly turned into an hour-long adventure. We approached the crosswalk and just as the counter got down to four seconds a bunch of us ran across. We laughed as we wondered what the cars might be thinking. I took pictures of the tall reflective buildings, flashy advertising, mini-version landmarks, shopping tourists, happy employees, and street performers – one who had a poker chip and told a guy in the audience to check his wallet, then quickly changed his mind when the guy pulled out a fistful of folded bills.

It’s easy to get lost in the awe of Vegas – the Statue of Liberty from New York City, the Luxor from Egypt, the Eiffel Tower from Paris, and the Walk of Fame stars from Hollywood to name a few. Then there’s other details – shiny, pointy, rocks, trees, lights, bricks, screens, a roller coaster, and giant minions. It’s hard to tell who is waking up and who is heading to bed. This is truly the city that never sleeps – it just stops selling shoes between 3:00 – 8:00 am (don’t quote that for accuracy).

New York New York

Luckily for pedestrians and drivers there are large sidewalks, most fenced or walled in, and large crosswalks over the busier roads to keep traffic moving. This allows cars to get where they’re going, drunks to stumble around, photographers to stop constantly, and other tourists to stare at billboards and maps and turn in circles as they realize they are lost – again. The escalators aren’t just for the lazy, but a great excuse to slow down and get a changing view of the strip. A guy put his lizard on me and then asked for $4.00. I quickly remembered that costumes and creatures need tips for pictures.

On my return to the car I pass restaurants, shopping plazas, and construction as I make my way through the maze of hallways and escalators; everything else has to be accessed by passing a slot machine or casino. The car is hotter than I remember, so I walk the dogs and head to the airport early at 12:30 pm to get them out of the sun. I parked on level 2M, Aisle B and as I’m taking pictures to help from getting lost an employee hands me a ‘you are here’ card. Then I ride the elevator up and down deciding whether to go to Checked Baggage or All Gates. Deanna is due to arrive in Terminal One at Gate A-11.

There is no denying you’re in a Vegas airport with all the advertising for shows and booze, and the clinking sounds of the slot machines. I get as close as security will allow and then find the nearest bar. I hadn’t planned on drinking, but with an hour to pass and a two-minute drive ahead of me… the red-bearded man named Seth suggested I get a Stella in a Sam Adams glass as that’s what him and his younger cousin Jeremiah were doing. When I finally met up with Deanna at 2:45 pm we took the guys, down here on business, to their office party at a hotel in Henderson.

I hadn’t planned on staying, but Deanna didn’t deny their invite, so we went with them to check in, put their bags away, and let me get a picture of the view. We got lost trying to find the hosts room, so I have pictures of that, but the guys didn’t want tourists in the party, so no pictures of the second pool outside or the three ounces of wine I consumed. After they won a door prize – tickets to a game in Portland – we, girls only, left. We approached the registration desk of Planet Hollywood at 5:45 pm after waiting in the check-in line.

Parking is free for seven days at a time and we found a spot on the third floor within view of the elevators, but then there is the walk past the bus depot and valet/taxi area for those that can afford to pay to get out of one car and into the next – definitely an option without dogs to walk. We were handed keys to room 3622 and told to take the second set of south elevators to get there. We wouldn’t be the only ones getting lost throughout Vegas, but our room is also within view of the elevators which will make our stay easier.

Monte Carlo

From our room window we can see the High Roller Ferris wheel to the far left and in the east are the Frenchman Mountains (also known as Sunrise Mtn. for their location). In our room is memorabilia, like the boots Whoopi Goldberg wore, from the film Fatal Beauty. I drop my bag of clothes and purse in the big purple chair and we both head down to the car to shove the dogs into one bag and haul them back up to the room. We thought we would take a shortcut through the casino/shops door from the parking garage but that turned into an hour-long detour.

Then I remembered I had to walk them. There is a patch of grass with poop baggies outside in the sun past four lanes of speeding taxis. I took them back up by leash with no issue. Piggy laid scared on the elevator floor and I held Sparky’s leash tight to keep him from jumping on his new friends. We left them to sleep in the room as we made our way downstairs at 7:15 pm. I was taking in everything. It’s not that I haven’t been to Vegas before (five years ago), or that I hadn’t traveled without Caleb before (three weeks ago), or that I hadn’t seen my friend in at least six years… oh wait, I hadn’t.

And into the evening

To The City of Secrets: Part 2

New York New York Clock

New York New York Clock

From this morning… I wanted to take lots of pictures to commemorate our time together and show Caleb what I did while we were apart. The carpet has squares and the walls have circles and there are rectangular desks and lamps, but what we begin to notice the most is the amount of cameras and security personnel. Every shop, restaurant, hotel, casino, bar, restroom, and bench comes with a camera and someone to guard it – whether seen or not – and I’m totally ok with this as it makes me feel safer walking around drunk in a bikini if I choose with tons of money dangling from the strings – but I do think that’s taking a risk.

Las Vegas McCarran International Airport

We decided to stay in our traveling jeans, but as the sun sets around here the scene changes. There is more skin, jewelry, feather boas, and fishnet stockings, but the same amount of men in suits and police in uniform. There are floor-to-ceiling lights near the café in the lobby and a large picture of a bunch of recognizable faces (from the 80s) on the wall, but a good way to tell if you’re drunk – there were a bunch of guys surrounding it and wondering who all the people were – or maybe it’s just a good judge of age. I spotted John Travolta and Robin Williams – could also be taste in films.

Each section seems to have its own theme from shiny floors and circular lights to bright carpets and long lights. Everything looks new and is constantly being cleaned. Then we smell someone’s strong perfume that must be following us – or it’s the scent that pours from the vents to cover the smell of smoke (legal indoors here), sweaty gamblers and drunks, and vomit or anything else that would make someone less likely to eat, drink, and spend money – or lose cash happily.

I had glanced over the list I made, but having no idea where any of the places were (some requiring vehicle transportation) we decided to walk and take the night as it came at us. We were overtaken by the multitude of shapes to drink booze out of, by the amount of poker chips on the craps and blackjack tables, and by the fire in the window of BurGR – one of the many restaurants owned by Gordon Ramsay – with others in London, Tokyo, Melbourne, and New York City.

I saw a sign for Margaritaville and thought that would be a good place to start and it would lead us on another adventure. The one crosswalk was closed, so we would have to take the other three to get there. This gave us time to look at the yellow-lit Eiffel Tower, watch part of the Bellagio fountain show blocked by trees, and see the moving blue lights on The Cosmopolitan. And place our eyes on the World’s Brightest Light Beam, at 42.3 billion candela, at the Luxor, the second largest hotel in Vegas. But since 2008, to save money and energy, only half of the lights are lit – and it can still be seen for miles.

I thought we would start with beers, but we didn’t walk into Beerville, so we ordered from the margarita menu at 8:30 pm. I bought the first round of $10 margaritas and drank a Who’s to Blame. We also ordered free water which is a safe desert requirement with everyone carrying bottles too. People sell them near the escalators outside for a dollar during the day. Our second drink would be thanks to Tom – as would the rest of the drinks for the evening. He bought me a light-up tie and Deanna some flexible green ears that blink and then we joined him and his friends on the patio.

We got to meet the girl selling all the green – horns, ties, sabers, and ears. Tom got some arm art as a parting gift before some of the other people took off. I went inside to help carry out drinks and got a beer while talking to a couple from London and watching the bartender flip bottles. Pack outside we began to slap hands with passing strangers – people in costume, elderly tour groups, backpackers with puppies, men in suits, girls in short dresses, couples with shopping bags and booze, and then Barney – who almost got punched in the face.

That was when we decided to party elsewhere – and wash our hands, but before we could leave an escort wanted to make an offer of service and he was ready to commit. He had plenty of cards to hand out and was willing to show what was hiding under his gray button shirt and gray cotton tank top – a pasty chest with a blue-striped tie. We tried not to laugh in his face as we walked away, but we didn’t make it very far. Clubs and restaurants pay people commission to get bracelets on customers that eventually go in. At the entrance of Carlos’ N Charlie’s we got the blue ones cut off and the red and yellow ones (endless drinks for ladies) put on at 10:45 pm.

Everyone we met was nice – the manager, the bouncer, the bartender, the waitress – at least that’s who I think they were. At the bar was some girls enjoying a huge plate of nachos that they let us share. Then a girl with a bottle of what I named ‘Mermaid Orgasm’ would make rounds pouring shots in our mouths. I got lost coming back from the bathroom the first time, so every time after I was escorted. Midnight came and went and one in the morning brought dancing – or a bunch of people shaking their bodies on the dance floor – mine with a tan guy, a short person, and a girl with tattoos.

Deanna and I both lost our drinks, but that didn’t matter. We could order something we didn’t like and get something else – it wasn’t costing us anything. Then someone ordered shots at 1:30 am and that did it for me. I knocked a drink out of a guy’s hand and then took a picture of him when he got a new one. We managed to leave the party behind and make our way to Bonanno NY Pizza in the Flamingo Food Court where we each ate a melting  piece of mushroom pizza for $6.45 each, that at 2:06 in the morning we would claim was the best tasting slice ever.

At 2:44 am we are in front of the Bellagio fountain looking at the blue reflection from The Cosmopolitan and at 3:00 am are stumbling by the escalators in the casino with the giant chandelier shining its purple brightness at us. The next stop would be the room. The right thing to do would’ve been to walk the dogs, but there’s no proof of that. What we would remember later is forgetting to visit the airport runway and watching a plane take off over the car or that at some point we got offered a joint that was taped to the bottom of someone’s foot – some things are missed opportunities and others are best left where they don’t concern me.

Did the first day in Vegas go as planned? No. Did we have fun? Yes. Do we remember all of it? Maybe. Will we have just as much fun if not more tomorrow? Of course. Would we love to come back with more friends and bring our mothers? You bet! But that’s just because my mom loves margaritas and with enough of those I’m sure I can talk her into getting a matching tattoo or maybe we will just buy matching dresses or shoes. This is the blurry recollection of my first night in Vegas with my best friend from the second grade – and yes, we grew up in Texas – as you can tell from my cowboy boots – even if I am from San Diego now.
