Knitting a Dog Hat

Three days and three broken needles later…

I found a pattern on Ravelry to humiliate the dog and roughly measured neck circumference and length of my dogs. I started with the recommended size US 4 needle and broke one on row 3. Then I switched to size US 5 until row 14, when I broke one of those too. I decided to use both sizes to finish the job. As much as I tried to keep the knitting loose, it just seemed to get tighter. I broke another US 5 needle on row 29. I should’ve stopped there, but still had the other end to do.

I started to bind off halfway through row 35. I was going to do 40 rows, but it came out too long for my short-necked dogs. This is a learning process and now I have a better way to judge the size of my doggies necks. I would like to think the needles, only costing 25 cents each, were cheap and that’s why they broke. Or perhaps it’s their small size versus the super bulky yarn. Next time I will try a hat with ear holes just to add to the difficulty level and to see if the dogs like it better. Soon they will be ready for that northern snow!

And I will update this post when I attach the ears – learn to crochet!

Shelter Island Boat Festival

What we thought we were going to see:

concert image from shelterislandboatfest.com

What we actually saw:

A maritime museum room on the way and a canopied booth at the event dedicated to Dennis Conner – an American yachtsman known as Mr. Americas Cup, because he was voted best sailor by his peers, offered history and memorabilia.

a ring he won that would fit on my arm

I got to walk on a 1.3 million dollar yacht – with an RV interior, to take a picture of another yacht and then got a free ride around the harbor on the electric boat.

We got to walk the yacht from the top – 2 ladder climbs up from walking on, to the bottom – just a few steps down to the engine room. Even the middle has a few steps of its own.

The electric boat is chartered by San Diego Comfort Cruise and they offer us some amazing views while in the harbor.

And here are some other photos I took on our way back to the car.

And I’ve Just Been Awarded…

…the Very Inspiring Blogger Award by Aneesa. The rules are for me to share seven six random things about myself and then nominate other bloggers.

1. Attempting to think of things for this list makes me feel awkward . The same feeling I get when confronted with an about me section – even though my blog is all about me…and the places and people I see.

2. My mom nicknamed me Messy Jessy when I was still putting yogurt in my hair and I live up to that name. I wear my food up to my elbows. I slurp soup, let gravity direct spaghetti into my mouth, and lick my dessert plate – in public, but I do try to be discreet.

3. I try to act embarrassed when getting called on my undies hanging out, but upon fixing the issue remember that I wore a cute pair today, and that’s ok!

4. Saw birds in my backyard and wanted a photo-shoot with them. Gave them a peanut butter birdseed pine cone – a reason to come back… and stay awhile, and now it is the Summer of the No Bird Sightings.

5. My fifth grade teacher knew President Clinton.

6. Was recently stuck in the middle of a which-do-you-prefer get-to-know-the-group game when asked whether I prefer beef or steak – I’m a vegetarian!

And my nominees are:

1. Mama Kat @ http://www.mamakatslosinit.com/ She loves her family, Ellen, and blogging and I love reading her blog trying to figure out which she loves more.

2. Natasha @ http://www.littlepinkmonster.com/ She is so crafty and loves parties, bunnies, and her cute little daughters. What’s not to like?

3. Anita @ http://traveldestinationbucketlist.com/ We are both girls that love to travel, but she has traveled further and I love getting ideas from her.

4. Sarah @ http://sarahforshaw.wordpress.com/ She always has a positive outlook and gives me a new perspective on things. Every day is a good day to read her blog.

5. Doctor @ http://doctorquack.wordpress.com/ Just love his opinion on travel and people and trees. I took a road trip based on one of his posts. A must read.

6. James @ http://notesplusultra.com/ It’s nice to know what’s happening on the other side of the planet and this blog does it with educational, insightful short stories.

I could keep going, but six seems to be the lucky number today!
