Story Time

There once was a squirrel that lived in the very top of the tallest tree in his woods. Most trees grew mighty thick and very close to each other. These trees had lots of branches and critters of all kinds inhabited them. But this squirrel, Roamy, was the only animal on his tree, at least as high up as he. There were few branches as most had been destroyed in a storm.

Roamy came from a large family of squirrels. He only had three siblings but he grew up with his 12 cousins, six aunts, three grandparents, his mom and her best friend and her seven kids – their home had been destroyed in the storm as well. So when Roamy was old enough to move out and find such a great, quiet place he was more than excited.

He took to widening a hole that a woodpecker once used to obtain lunch. It took him a week or so and he got caught in the rain one night. He crawled down to the lower branches to hide under the leaves. When his new home was built, he took to the trees to find only the best furnishings for his place. One day he even made it as far as the beach for the whitest sand for decoration and cleaning purposes.

When the sun was high Roamy would sit on the second highest branch, to keep hidden from hawks, and watch the world above and below him. There were little red fruits that began to grow up there that didn’t seem to be found anywhere else. Roamy was cautious at first. He took a handful and went to find a test subject – a mole that threw caution to the wind and enjoyed the free treat.

Roamy was excited upon return; the rest of the berries were all his, and they were most delicious. Roamy got too carried away and soon there were but a few berries left and still months left before they would regrow, and Roamy had done nothing to ensure he had food for the winter. He hadn’t even been out of his tree in weeks. When he began to look for nuts and other berries he ran into some family.

They were so excited to see him; he couldn’t understand why, because he didn’t even want to be bothered by them. He searched in vain and found little. He thought he might hibernate through the winter; that would definitely save on food, but before he gave up entirely he went back to the sea. He searched all the empty shells and came back empty-handed. He crawled up to his branch.

Winter came and with it, the storms. Roamy kept himself entertained trying to cry in rhythm with the storms and his hunger pains. He didn’t want to look weak to his family, and they wouldn’t have gathered enough food for him anyways. When he could take it no longer he climbed down his beautiful tree and up the old bent oak, that had been there for generations, looking for a welcoming face.

What he found was disease. Two of his cousins and his grandpa had caught the swine flu from the crows that migrate to the area. They had little time left and Roamy offered to put them in his house until they fell asleep forever, if only he could have some of their rations to restore his energy. His mom came out of the den and offered him half lunch now and the other half when the job was done.

Roamy worked hard making his sick family members a comfy place to rest. He liked the idea of working for rewards and the idea of having others to help you in a time of need. He no longer wanted to live all alone and so far away from all the other critters. He would make it his mission to start befriending them and start offering his services in return for what they had to offer.

Then one day, Roamy gets a delivery. He had gotten a flight suit one year for his birthday but didn’t feel his woods were the safest place for a landing. The delivery was a train ticket to the mountains that overlooked a black-sand beach. Roamy was more than overwhelmed. He packed his little bags and stuffed some snacks in his cheeks and he was ready to go.

After Roamy’s arrival he had to wait two weeks to get to the top of the mountain. While he waited he made friends with the locals. On the day of his climb, many of his friends came out to see him fly. He soared through the sky beautifully, but had never practiced landing and soon found his tail between a rock and a hard place. The news that came after was devastating. Roamy had passed out from shock.

When he awoke he found what was left of his tail bandaged. He felt there was no way he could return to the woods and face all the other squirrels; his life would never be the same. But his friends didn’t let him pity himself. They all seemed to have their own stories. They told Roamy about life, and about how things happen, and that even when you think it’s bad, you should live until you can think no more. Because only then is your life truly over.

Roamy took their advice and began to think all the time. Finally, after a year of experiments, Roamy was able to create a tail that would allow him to steer better while flying. He created another piece that helped him to keep balance in the trees. He had blueprints for other friends and things to help them. Then he thought of his family and how they had helped him. He traveled back home to return the favor.

Roamy had been gone so long that his mom was no longer there, but there were plenty of new cousins running through the trees and his siblings now had families of their own. Roamy showed his family what he had been up to and they were very proud of him. Roamy decided to take the top of the tallest tree and turn it into the largest squirrel treehouse any critter anywhere had ever seen.

Always Ready

I may not always be fully prepared, but I am always ready for what the day may bring. I didn’t think I could stay away long. Caleb and I went for a 40-mile ride and the last few miles really made our butts tired. I got a picture of an alligator in the wild only ten feet from us. Caleb was going to take his shoes off and walk over, the gator was still young, maybe 4-6 feet (wrestle-able), but when the gator jumped in himself, Caleb changed his mind. The water was deeper than it looked.

There was a little tower available at the end of the dock we were on. The stairs were sturdy, but the rest of the legs were not so tightly secured. I noticed gator eyes watching us and we left to find a snack spot. We enjoyed donuts, apple fritters, and PBJs. We had stopped earlier so I could have orange juice today too. After lunch Caleb noticed a hawk with a fish in his right claw – I got the picture.

An amazing opportunistic photo day considering after the first ten miles I took the camera off my neck. I need a seatbelt pad or to be wearing a sweater for it to be comfortable. And we got lucky that the 50% chance of thunderstorms only left a bit of rain back home while we were away. We took the dogs to the park to continue enjoying the nice weather and Sparky has a newfound love of frisbees; he will dig at the dirt until it comes up and happily bring it back.

For a third of the country it was Superbowl, whatever number, time, but for us it was time for pizza and beer at the house, sans football. Finished some laundry while waiting for the oven to go off. After eating it was hard to keep my eyes open and we went to bed early. When we move I am planning to ride my bike as far west as I can make it before Caleb picks me up with the dogs and we go the rest of the way together.

I am ready for these practice days. I am ready for what long days the future has. We have a semi-plan that has me averaging from 50-85 miles a day. I might not even make it that far; I will be super tired, but also overwhelmed with what I will be accomplishing. I am also ready to move away from the litter box – ashtray that has become our home. We constantly walk on the sand covering the poop logs and are guided down a single path between crap bombs.

I know apartments have weight limits on dogs and now I know another reason; it’s not just so that big dogs have bigger places to live, but so people don’t walk around thinking there are cows hiding somewhere. I now also know why some people have to use grocery bags and both hands. I enjoy using a doggy bag and one hand to pick up after both of my dogs.

I know there is always negative and positive in the world, but I am ready to live near the more positive – they are cleaner, nicer, and more respectable. I realize they are too busy exercising at fancy clubs, drinking expensive beverages, or taking their kids to the beach to be outside of your house letting their animal defecate wherever they please while they smoke up a pile of ashes in your absence.

When searching for apartments I wish Caleb made half as much. We saw a really nice place when we first moved to Florida. It had hardwood floors, full kitchen with bar area, a desk area, ceiling fans and lights in every room, full size washer and dryer, and I could go on, but as our excitement built even though we were twenty miles from base, the lady told us we make way too much.

I’m ready to live in a more understanding and un-profiling America. There is still too much racialism and stereo-typing going on. Some people might think I like these things, but I have just been exposed to them through friends and enemies eyes and I still clearly see them. How can someone who makes less than us live in something better? This gives me no reason to stride forward for a Hollywood mansion when all I have to do is live nicely off other people’s taxes.

I can have a fancy home, a decently used car with fancy rims and an overly loud sound-system in the back. I can have a free cell phone and change my number every time bill collectors call. I can have free daycare for my many children that I should have stopped having. I can play lottery in hopes that I win and then use my foodstamp card (stamps make it too obvious how poor I am supposed to be) to buy chips and soda; because remember that’s all the poor can afford.

Enough ranting for today. I am ready to move on with my day and I wish that one day others will be more willing to improve their lives and in so doing improve the lives of others around them. This world is a beautiful place but it shouldn’t have to be for just a certain few. Where we rode yesterday, there were groups of bikes, runners, people with children and dogs, and some runners in the middle of the road. All the cars and trucks seemed overly happy to give us the space we needed. So much so, that one car almost hit a runner on the other side giving us space on our side.

Only one truck felt it necessary to pass us honking and cussing while we were on the shoulder, not in the road like we had been previously. When their jealousy overcomes them like that they should ask us questions on how we can help, not insult us for helping ourselves. I’ve been meaning to post for about two weeks that we finally got panniers for our bikes, they cost more than we thought. They add some weight at first, but they are waterproof and carry lots. We got ours from bikebagshop.com

A Farewell Ride to Florida

We rode a 50-mile round trip and got six miles from Villano Beach. On the way out I was appreciating the weather and thinking how yummy the donuts would taste when we stopped for a break. We passed by runners and got passed by cyclists in both directions – one day I will have a bike that allows me to keep up – but will I want to go as fast? We stopped more than usual this time because there were animals just killing to have their picture taken. Caleb noticed a skilled fisherman in the sky with his catch-in-claw and I was just fast enough to get a photo. I was going to attempt to pet an alligator as he lay sunbathing no more than ten feet away, but when he got startled I realized just how deep the water was and thought he might not be alone. Better to just take pictures and move on. We got to see lush green fields with rich houses next to them and huge houses under construction waiting to be the neighbor. We got to see the animals in the sky and water, and people in the street. We felt the breeze in our face and the exhaust in our lungs when an old truck drove by. This is an example of what I expect to encounter with marshes and mosquitoes as I ride west through Florida.

Creativity Denied

The post you are looking for has been temporarily removed. I am uncertain at this point when it shall return but I look eagerly forward to that moment. Though I can guarantee that even if it does return before the end of February, it is not likely to be available during March and April when I may very well be too busy enjoying myself on plans that I am making now, and with the tasks that must always be handled during a move.

We have to find a path to our destination, then a place to rest. When we get there we need to have a dentist, a veterinarian, a library, a park, a university (hopefully with another library), a grocery store, and hopefully museums and farm-stands and other such things nearby. We have to work around school now, school then, and try to plan a mini-vacation between job transfers.

Not only my busy-ness will try to keep me away, but the fact that most of my life possessions will be put into boxes and bags that will be loaded into boxes and put into the back of a truck until we determine a drop-off date to have them unloaded in our new abode. I’m excited for the adventure ahead and always a little nervous but upon return will have great stories and will again have keyboard access to my pictures and all the unknown joy that I forgot that they bring.

I will miss being here everyday, and I might stop in from time to time, but I haven’t noticed too many likes on my personal drawings. Word paint can not express the time, place, and emotion that my Canon can with some help, sometimes. Oh, and there will be no picture today. A first, and hopefully a last in this instance, but surely a start to many firsts to come.

Tearful Tease

I was waiting, hopefully, all day for the mail to come and for my USB adapter to be in there. I was going to post a picture of it with the caption, Yay! That is not how today turned out. I received a green adapter with a picture of a mouse on it. I plugged my keyboard into it and then tried it in the mouse and keyboard hole. It will work while in the mouse-hole but that disables my mouse. What a damper this has put on my mood, but not for much longer *fingers crossed.*
