Pancakes, Leno Live, and Pizza

At the house, 9:00 am: Me – We can go to breakfast at that place you saw on TV – Trails Eatery. It’s on the way to Burbank.

On the road: Me – We can get gas on base where it will be cheaper.
Barry – But there is a shell around here somewhere and we have a card for it.
Me – Yep, it’s up here on the right. Five minutes later – You can reverse to the pump behind you. That one is broken.
Mom – What’s taking so long?
Barry – The card won’t work because it’s from out-of-state and they want me to sign a prepay authorization for $50, but I’m only going to sign for $30. Then he only gets $24 in gas and has to go back in, with his receipt, to get his money back.

Trails Eatery

Trails Eatery

At the Eatery, 10:30 am, I get Elvis cakes with lemon water and coffee, Mom gets pumpkin pancakes, and Barry gets the multigrain – not his favorite.
Mom – Let me try some of yours. There’s no bananas in here. Did they forget them?
Me – You can’t take a nibble off the edge and expect massive ingredients. Get in there. Mom – Oh, that’s better (banana with peanut butter and chocolate).

On the road again, at 11:00 am: Barry – Can you call the unemployment office so we can get paid this week? (while they wait on his disability claim) I look up the number, give it to Mom, she starts to call, and we miss a turn. I will skim through the book she is reading, The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementias, and Memory Loss. This is a very difficult time for all involved, but I look on the bright side – Barry’s not as bad as some of the cases in here – yet.

I text Caleb that we should be in Burbank by 2:00 pm, giving us plenty of time to get where we need to be, and in doing so realize that we are here now – at 12:42 pm. It seems Barry has no gauge or awareness of speed limits. I walk us the long way around to relax and enjoy the stress-less surroundings.

At Coffee Commissary with 2 hours to wait: Mom – Jess, is that a chia seed muffin?
Me – No Mom, it’s a flaxseed muffin.
Mom to barista – We’ll take two green teas and a black tea. Do you do refills?
Barista – No mam. (This isn’t a Texas restaurant, but a California coffee shop).
Barry – Why do they call them black and green teas when they’re brown and yella?
Me – The leaves started out that color and then changed when brewed.

From 3:00 – 5:30 pm: We walk to the studio, sit on a bench for 30 minutes, walk over and up the stairs, and are seated on Leno’s left near the middle. There’s a Q&A and photos with Leno. There is a man who will get us laughing and hand out prizes during the show. Charlie Sheen’s skit is full of drugs and sex. Joy Behar, woman from The View, wasn’t as funny as Mom expected. But the dancing from the singer of Neon Trees was good.

The show is literally an hour. Behind the scenes pictures are taken, gifts given, fanning the sweat off their faces, previewing the prompter boards, and reapplying makeup. Laughs are encouraged, but there is no light-up sign for them. The applause sign comes on when the camera may be showing the audience when going to and from commercial.

A lady stole a seat while the person had gone to the bathroom. A man, on his way out, took a picture. I’m not sure if security caught up with him. Near the exit another man took a photo, just out of view of the guard that had a full view of me. The Studio doesn’t want any pictures taken inside the building, at all.

At the car, 5:17 pm, I text Caleb that we are on our way to Oki Dog to pick up his pastrami burrito. At 5:47 pm, I text him again to let him know that we drove to the wrong address (right number, wrong city). It will take us another 30 minutes to drive to the little orange building on Fairfax Ave in West Hollywood. We get two burritos to-go so Mom can try one.

regret

Luckily, Z Pizza, dinner for tonight, is only a mile away. They have locations in 16 states, D.C., Dubai, and Vietnam. One of those happens to be on Slaughter Lane in Austin, Texas – one of Barry’s favorites. I order the two veggie slices in the warmer – tomato basil and artichoke spinach with an Izze at 6:45 pm.
Me – Why don’t you get one of these? It’s sparkling grapefruit?
Mom – I don’t like the way those taste anymore.
They got a large ZBQ chicken pizza with water. Mom and I got red velvet cupcakes, no cream cheese frosting, and Barry got vanilla.
Me – Did you tell them no cilantro?
Mom to cook – Is it too late for no cilantro? To me – thanks for reminding me.
Me – No problem. (Though I wonder if they would’ve let me take it home to Caleb).

Less than three hours later and we are home. Caleb has duty tonight. The burritos are still warm, so Mom takes a half and shares it with the dogs at 10:00 pm. She decides she doesn’t like pastrami and gives the other half to Caleb. She will play solitaire on the couch until she passes out, eventually making her way to bed before morning.

To Burbank to See the Stars

Warner Bros. Building

Warner Bros. Building

3 weeks ago: Mom – I want to see Jay Leno live.
Me – Let me look online and see what I can do. Ok, I filled out a form and it’s a lottery system. We should know before the show.

2 weeks ago: Me – You won’t believe what I got in my inbox. That’s right, approval for 4 people to go see Leno on Tuesday the 21st at 4:00pm.
Mom – Ok, I will be there by Monday.

1 week ago: Me – You won’t believe what happened. I was looking in my inbox so that I could print the confirmation email and it somehow got deleted. Luckily, I was able to recover it and went to the library twice (forgot my card the first time) to print it out.
Mom – Oh, I would’ve been upset. (Do I hear passive-aggressive tones?)

W. Olive Ave.

W. Olive Ave.

Yesterday: Mom – I want to try cronuts.
Me on the phone – Hello, You’re the third place I’ve called. Only on weekends, gotcha. Mom – Well, we will just have to get donuts then. I want to go by that local place (owned by the brothers that’s rarely open).
Me to Barry – Turn right, your other right. Now we have to U-turn. They’re closed.
Mom – I love bagels!
Me – Good, then Barry can drive us straight to Bruegger’s Bagels in Coronado.

At the bagel shop at 8:30 am: Me to Barry – You can park here next to the curb… or there next to the hotel… or in the hotel parking lot. (just please pick a spot!)
Me to employee – Ahh, you don’t have the breakfast bagel (dried fruits and nuts). I will get the cranberry toasted with maple cream cheese.
Mom – Ooh, I want one with the maple and a plain chocolate chip bagel. He’ll (as she points to her husband) have the wheat and cream cheese.
Me to employee – We’ll take two medium French toast coffees and a water. Thanks.
Mom – Sit down so he can eat and then focus on driving.

On the road: Me – Do you need the address?
Mom – I have us going to NBC studios.
Me – Well this says we need to go to Burbank Studios (less than 2 miles away).

Parked at the studios: Me – We don’t have to be in line for another three hours.
Mom – Cool. We can go look at the food trucks and then walk around.
Barry – What are we doing?
Me – We are walking and eating. Just walking and eating.

50 Years (1960-2010) Hollywood Walk of Fame

50 Years (1960-2010) Hollywood Walk of Fame

We walk around the Warner Bros. Studios and a security guard gives us a map to a gift shop down the street. I take pictures of walls and signs, we go through security, and I take photos of shirts and shot glasses.
Mom – When we are done here we can have lunch at that Mexican place or I won’t hear the end of it. (Barry wants to sit down and eat queso and chips.)

At El Torito at 1:15: I go to the bathroom and come back to a tea/lemonade mix, chips and salsa, and a quick delivery of greasy cheese with jalapenos and an avocado slice on top.
Barry – It’s not my favorite (in reference to the queso, he was expecting the creamy stuff).
Me – This drink is good, but I think I will try the cucumber spritzer too. We can share.
Mom – I want some of their flourless chocolate cake. To the waitress – Make that two!
Barry and I get a plate and Mom gets half of both.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre

We get in line at 2:00 pm, go through security at 3:00 pm, I take their picture with Leno’s cardboard cutout, and we talk to some people in line. We wonder who all the people are, with the purple passes, that get in front of us. At 4:00 pm we are told we can’t get in, along with 30 other people. The seating capacity is 385. We can get a VIP pass for tomorrow.

Leaving the studio area: Mom – We can stay the night here and look around.
Me – Woo Hoo! I will text Caleb and let him know and call the neighbor to watch the dogs!
While I’m on the phone they change their mind. Barry wants to drive back to San Diego.
Mom – Well we’re not leaving just yet. I want to see Hollywood!

inside Sweet! candy store

We park at the corner of Hollywood and Highland. We walk to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, watch a free video in the Wax Museum, make music on the Piano Steps, and walk through a large candy store – Sweet! We walk past the buskers, the lingerie, and the bars.

In the car at 6:00 pm: Barry – It’s going to take us all night to get home in traffic like this.
Mom – Well, You’re the one that wanted to… (edited for brevity)
I talk to my dad, play Fruit Ninja, play a piano game, and read from The Critique of Pure Reason and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to distract myself between conversations with Mom.

Yu wan sum sushi?

Home at 8:30 pm: Barry – Oh look, Caleb is home.
Me – Nope, that’s just our neighbor letting the dogs out. (Caleb won’t get home until 9:30)
Me to Dan in the backyard – Hey, so, uh, ya, you know, but, they, and then, so…
Dan – I got it. I fed them, gave them plenty of treats, and played with them outside. I can do the same tomorrow.
Me – Thanks Dan. The dogs and I appreciate it.

Mom’s Dream Come True: A Trip to the San Diego Zoo

Barry with pancake and potatoes. Mom with French toast and coffee

Barry with pancake and potatoes. Mom with French toast and coffee

Caleb is up at 4:30 am and I get up at 6:30 when I hear my mom up and stirring. I get to talk to Tiffany – my sister at home in Texas that wanted to come visit, but just started a new job – via Mom’s cell phone. Barry joins us in the living room where we talk on the couch for half an hour. I take a shower and then we go to the West Coast Café. We let a customer go in front of us while the two of them decide if Barry wants the breakfast burrito (it’s like an enchilada) or a pancake – “No, it’s not the wheat ones you like so well”.

We go outside and find a table away from the smokers and wait. I ordered a strawberry protein smoothie, but it was more of an icee than what I expected. When the food arrives Barry’s eyes grow with the size of his plate – Do I have to eat all that? They didn’t want the meat that came with their pancakes and French toast so the man who took our order gave them some extra carbs and Barry got a side of potatoes that we shared at the table. I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter, bananas, and honey. Our waiter brought out silverware – and the syrup in an industrial size container.

hippoless

Barry begins to pour the syrup on half his pancake and wonders if he has to use all the syrup – the container isn’t full, but there’s still enough for ten of his pancakes in there – I let him know he doesn’t have to. I brought a to-go container and we will take half his pancake and a slice of French toast in it and wrap some potatoes in the multitudes of napkins that we were given. We drop all this off at the house before we drive to the San Diego Zoo. Mom doesn’t want syrup leaking in the backseat.

We go by the ITT Office (military discount store for amusement parks) on base before the zoo to save at least $7.00 per ticket, and get aerial tram and bus tour rides included. The gate on Harbor Drive from the Main St/ Division St exit is closed, so we go to the one by the NEX on 32nd Street. Barry thinks the $40 each is a lot for a zoo, but I let him know we are buying the animal food and care. We have no problems getting to the zoo parking lot, but once there, Barry is overwhelmed with the size of the place.

We park in the 2 Giraffe lot and make our way to the entrance. I take their picture by the zoo map and then we walk to the right. We walk miles looking for pandas, polar bears, elephants, kookaburras, and partridges (not in their pear tree). Mom’s favorite animal is the koala bear and she buys a magnet in the gift shop to commemorate the day. Barry is ready to leave at 3:00 pm, but we make it until 4:00 pm and skip the insect exhibit to go to Yogurtland in Little Italy – Barry loves frozen yogurt.

We park two blocks away and fill our cups will lots of flavors and mine with lots of toppings. We take a few blocks detour back to the car to see more of the area and by the dog park to see the Dalmatian-looking Great Dane. Home at 6:30 and Barry is ready for bed – tired from driving and sore from walking. I knit and Mom plays solitaire until Caleb gets home at 8:00. The three of us walked the dogs, that had been home for ten hours and not let out, around the block after dropping Caleb’s key off with the neighbor so that the dogs won’t suffer when we go to The City of Angels tomorrow.

Sunset With Mom

sunmom

a stop by one of my favorite signs

Mom shows up a day, and an hour, early – Surprise! Caleb and I had finished making peach cobbler for our neighbor Ritchie. I dropped one off at his house and kept the second on the stove. Caleb was waking from his nap, after having duty the day before, when Sparky began to bark. Hugs are exchanged and I suggest we go check out the new Pier South Hotel that just opened up in Imperial Beach less than a week ago. I’d recommend staying there, but only if you have $200/night in your budget.

Heading back to land and Mom spots a sand dollar from the pier. A nice couple keeps an eye on it and directs us towards it. That’s incentive enough for my mom to walk another half-mile down the beach looking for more. She will find at least seven that are still whole and picks up a broken one in hopes of finding some of the ‘doves’ inside. Mom found me a baby sand dollar and Caleb, not to be outdone, found me one twice that size, but still smaller than the ones I’m used to seeing.

We made our way back to the car in twilight and would walk to dinner at Don Panchos. We ordered three burritos, one for each of us, and some cheese enchiladas for Barry. Then Mom and I walked to two convenient stores looking for a blackberry-flavored Ice drink and grabbed three. It’s something new they drink, or southern-style iced tea, and I’m glad Caleb and I only had to share one – “It’s not my favorite.” This is one of Barry’s more familiar quotes and I hear it as a description towards dinner upon our return.

Barry enjoying the sunset

Barry is diagnosed with Dementia, the most common cause being Alzheimer’s. He has no problem sharing this information with us at 54 years old. He’s grateful to be healthy otherwise and still be here to see his family, unlike his father that passed of heart disease in the 80s. Part of his frontal lobe is missing and this has drastically affected his taste buds. He will still eat things that aren’t his favorite, but he prefers cheese enchiladas, burger and fries from Dairy Queen, wheat pancakes, and frozen yogurt. He stirs his meal together and offers us some. It reminds me of the putrid-looking meals I make at home.

Mom still looking for sand dollars

His short-term memory suffers the most as does his ability to make decisions. He’s nice and full of love and questions about everything. Mom says he no longer likes violent films like Forrest Gump – his poor buttocks. After dinner and a long drive, Barry is ready for bed when we get home at 7:00 pm. Caleb sets up the air mattress for him in the office  and I look at my mom’s new-to-her Dell laptop. She wants to know if the wi-fi works, so while I have internet connected I update her firewall and can’t help but laugh at the 500MB ram of her operating system – old, but plenty for playing solitaire.

twenty years later... and still walking through life together

twenty years later… and still walking through life together

I show Mom my inkle loom, the picture from the Renaissance Faire of 2011, the calendar  made by to-kuehne.de, my degree on the wall with knickknacks underneath, and my two current knitting projects – patterned socks and a chair cover. Caleb will go to bed at 9:00 pm and Mom and I will stay up till midnight talking about whatever we can think of next. We almost made it to bed once, stood in the hallway for a bit, and made our way back to the couch. It’s nice to visit with them and not hear about their exit strategy upon arrival.

Zero to Hero: Day Seven

Create and upload a simple header, or test out a few different backgrounds.

I forgot how much fun it could be to play around with colors, themes, backgrounds, and widgets. I would like to say, “Thank You” to the people at The Daily Post who thought it would be helpful to bloggers fresh and seasoned for inspiring me to connect again with the other parts of this wonderful program – not just write, add pictures, publish – at least for the few prompts that inspire me to act. I also have to thank them for the Making Writing Prompts Personal post. They were able to hit on my opinion directly and I should take their suggestions more broadly – especially if it will get me writing. Here are some of my attempts at changing the look of my blog:

Doing this exercise helped make it obvious that likes change over time – as does everything else. I prefer to keep the background simple so it doesn’t detract from my photos, but I noticed a more purple persuasion in my choices. I look forward to doing this more often as my blog grows with me. In high school I stopped wearing purple to show my rebellion against school spirit. Now I can gladly revel in plum, violet, thistle, and orchid – on my blog, on my fingernails, on my woolly shirt, and my Dr. Bronner’s lotion bottle.

I also snuck in a Day Six assignment: Publish a post that includes a new-to-you element. I included a featured image. If only I had known more about what my theme offered by clicking on its link in my dashboard and exploring the possibilities. This doesn’t mean every post will be as grand. Writing over a thousand words can take some time and effort out of me, but when I get good panoramas or other images, or a haiku, it’s nice to know that there’s a special place to showcase it.

Question of the day: How do you have fun?
